The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to:

University of California, Davis

Assistant Water Resources Specialist in Cooperative Extension and Assistant Professor

Description: The Department of Land, Air and Water Resources and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of California, Davis invites applications for the position of Assistant Water Resources Specialist in Cooperative Extension (80%) and Assistant Professor of Water Resources (20%).

Closing Date: Open until filled, but all application materials, including letters of recommendation, must be received by September 30, 2010 to assure full consideration.

UC Davis is an affirmative action/equal employment opportunity employer and is dedicated to recruiting a diverse faculty community. We welcome all qualified applicants to apply, including women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Duties: We seek a broadly trained and experienced physical scientist with ability to conduct water resources management and policy research related to environmental and agricultural sustainability. This position is intended to stimulate the integration of hydrologic sciences into water management and policy, thereby producing innovative solutions to difficult water problems. California water conditions and demands in particular spur the need for interdisciplinary research and cooperative extension in the area of irrigation and watershed management to promote policies that link science and governance in a participatory process among multiple stakeholders. Water use efficiency is a particularly important aspect of the position because of anticipated decreases in water supply for irrigated agriculture as a result of climate change and urban and environmental water needs. Innovative research will be on important water management and water use issues such as irrigation water use e
fficiency, water quality aspects of new and current irrigation water management practices at the water district/watershed scale, subsurface storage and recovery, TMDL's, best-management practices for irrigated agriculture, agricultural drainage problems, floodplain policy, riparian and aquatic habitat rehabilitation/preservation, and urbanization.

The position will maintain a strong extension program to facilitate greater penetration of the physical sciences into the management and policy arenas and link water management and policy with other policy issues such as climate change, land use change, and population pressure. Other potential research and extension areas include: impacts of new legal or institutional paradigms of water policy, new management and policy structures to accomplish water quality sustainability, urban and agricultural water conservation to mitigate increasing water scarcity, and land and water management strategies to manage water and soil salinity. The position will complement the Department's and Hydrologic Sciences Graduate Group's existing strengths, including surface and subsurface hydrology, stream restoration, geochemistry, contaminant transport and fate, irrigation, field investigations, and modeling. The appointee is expected to teach one course per year on a topic of his/her choice that complements and strengthens campus curricula on water.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in hydrology, water resources, geosciences, civil/environmental engineering or a closely related discipline is required. For additional information concerning the position and to submit application materials, please visit http://recruitments.ucdavis.edu/.

To Apply: Please include: curriculum vitae, description of current and projected research, summary of cooperative extension and teaching interests and experience, and up to three publications, all in PDF format. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference and undergraduate and graduate program transcripts to be sent directly to Dr. Graham E. Fogg, Search Committee Chair, LAWR, University of California, Davis, 1 Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616. Letters may also be sent via e-mail to crcantlin@ucdavis.edu.
