The February 2010 Dinner Meeting of the Southern CA Branch of the Groundwater Resources Association of CA will include a presentation by Dr. Alan Jeffrey on Environmental Forensics and how to identify potential sources of petroleum hydrocarbon and chlorinated solvent releases.

Abstract: Petroleum products and chlorinated solvents are frequently released into soils and groundwater. Responsibility for remediating these releases is often a contentious issue and relies on a legally defensible identification of their source. In some cases, such as recent surface spills, the source of the release may be readily ascertained from the site history. In other cases, particularly with subsurface groundwater plumes, identifying the source is more difficult. Environmental forensics is the process of identifying the source of these releases, and relies on a wide array of investigative techniques. Dr. Jeffrey will outline analytical techniques that help to identify the source and release time of petroleum products. Recent stable isotope methods for distinguishing chlorinated solvent releases and assessing remedial options will also be discussed. Several case studies will be shown, demonstrating the practical applications of these techniques.

Dr. Alan Jeffrey is a Senior Geochemist at DPRA/Zymax Forensics in Escondido, California. Dr. Jeffrey received his PhD in Chemical Oceanography from Texas A&M University for research using stable isotope ratios to determine the origin of natural gas. He has over 20 years of U.S. and international experience in environmental and petroleum geochemistry. Much of his work has focused on the use of geochemical and stable isotope techniques to solve environmental problems, including sources of spilled hydrocarbon fuels, chlorinated solvents, and fugitive methane seeps.

Important Branch News

The Southern California Branch is continuing its scholastic sponsorship program, with local sponsors supporting our annual scholarship fund for students who are engaged in groundwater studies. If your organization is interested in participating as a sponsor for a future event, please contact a Branch Officer.

Our scholastic sponsor for February 2010 is CalClean Inc.:
CalClean Inc., located in Tustin, California, has been providing remediation services for sites all around California. With TEN powerful 25-hp liquid ring pump truck-mounted systems and equipment storage locations from San Diego to Eureka to South Lake Tahoe and many central cities, CalClean routinely works with over one hundred environmental consultants. While most remediation projects are USTCF funded, CalClean also works on many oil-company and private remediation projects. In the past ten years, CalClean has obtained 70 case closures and has recently placed over forty sites in final closure monitoring. With the State Water Resources Control Board keenly interested in case closures, CalClean has been able to quickly provide remediation of gasoline and diesel impacted sites to low risk threshold levels. CalClean is also an equipment manufacturer and can build remediation systems for your sites at competitive prices already pre-approved by the USTCF for numerous projects around California. CalClean has equipment for remediation of chlorinated impacted sites.

Our goal is to close sites while providing the highest level of productivity, dependability, pricing, and communication for environmental consultants. Over the past 10 years, CalClean has obtained 100% reimbursement from the USTCF. Since we are a vendor, we have no conflicts with the consultants around the state. Instead, we work closely with consultants and the synergy provides cost-effective solutions to site cleanups. Sorry Disney - we have the happiest and safest employees anywhere! And over 95% of our work annually is repeat business.
